Background of the study
Language contact often results in significant syntactic shifts, especially in multilingual settings. Nigerian Pidgin, a lingua franca, is notably affected by such interactions. In Abuja, the convergence of diverse linguistic backgrounds has led to unique syntactic constructions within Nigerian Pidgin (Obinna, 2023). This study examines the syntactic implications of language contact by focusing on how interactions with other Nigerian languages and English influence sentence structure, clause formation, and grammatical markers. Prior research indicates that language contact can foster both simplification and innovation in syntax as speakers adapt to diverse communication needs (Ifeanyi, 2024). The study will analyze a range of spoken and written samples from Abuja to investigate the evolution of syntactic features under language contact pressures. It will also assess the influence of social factors such as education and media exposure on these changes (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite awareness of language contact effects, limited research has addressed its specific syntactic implications in Nigerian Pidgin, particularly in Abuja. Initial observations suggest that multilingual interactions produce innovative yet non-standard syntactic constructions (Okafor, 2023). This lack of systematic analysis hinders our understanding of how these changes affect communication and linguistic identity. The study seeks to fill this gap by examining the syntactic alterations driven by language contact.
Objectives of the study

  • To analyze the syntactic features of Nigerian Pidgin influenced by language contact.
  • To assess how interactions with other languages alter standard syntactic structures.
  • To evaluate the social factors driving these syntactic changes.
    Research questions
  • What syntactic modifications are evident in Nigerian Pidgin due to language contact?
  • How does interaction with other languages influence these syntactic features?
  • What social dynamics contribute to the observed syntactic changes?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of the syntactic effects of language contact on Nigerian Pidgin in Abuja. Its findings will enhance our understanding of language evolution in multilingual contexts and offer valuable insights for educators, linguists, and policymakers engaged in language planning and preservation (Ndukwe, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the syntactic implications of language contact in Nigerian Pidgin in Abuja. It does not cover phonological or semantic aspects of language contact.
    Definitions of terms
  • Language Contact: The interaction between speakers of different languages, leading to linguistic change.
  • Syntactic Implications: The effects on sentence structure and grammatical rules.
  • Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used across Nigeria.
